Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why has my water bill so high?

A: The main reason for your water bill to increase might be due to small malfunctions in your home plumbing system that let out water. At first glance they don’t seem very serious and are easy to ignore, or sometimes they’re so small that it’s hard to even notice them.

Q: What should I be looking for?

A:There are a few things you should look out for if you notice that your water bill is running higher than usual. The most common cause would be a damaged toilet flapper (the mechanism that allows the water to go from the tank to the bowl). An easy way to check it is to add a few drops of food coloring in the tank and wait for about 30 minutes. If you can see the coloring in the bowl, then your toilet is surely running. Another thing you should check is your water meter. If you think that there is no water leaks in your home, but the meter is still fluctuating, then you definitely have a problem. Sprinklers can also cause some troubles. Try to regulate how often they go off.

Q: How important is it for me to have these leaks fixed?

A: Very important. Not only do they increase your water bills, but the electricity bills can cause you headaches just as well. A basic example of this is when people ignore hot water leaks from the faucet. The water heater will constantly keep on working and will waste electricity.

Q: Should I have the drains snaked and when?

A: It depends on whether you have chronic problems with the drains or not. If they are in good condition, then having them snaked could cause unwanted problems later on. I, unlike bigger companies, prefer not to push my clients into doing this maintenance if it’s unnecessary. There are exceptions, of course – the outside, pool and storm drains should be snaked out every other year if not annually, because they get clogged up by dirt or roots.

Q: Can you snake out the drains on a regular basis?

A: Yes, of course. I recommend that problematic drains be snaked out regularly, because if they’re left unattended for a longer period of time, at some point it might be too late to fix them with this procedure. I am quite happy to offer my clients this service as preventative maintenance and make sure that the issue is off their minds. It also saves them money that would otherwise go for more complicated and expensive procedures.
